EMDR

I recently completed the first part of my EMDR training. For those of you who do not know what this is, its a form of psychotherapy which uses eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to assist clients in processing distressing events.

When trauma occurs, sometimes events are not processed to an adaptive resolution and are stored in the brain in the original form. Every time we encounter a trigger the unprocessed memories as well as sights, sounds, thoughts and feelings can come flooding back which can be highly distressing for the individual who experienced the original trauma.

The aim of EMDR is to get the client to process the event to an adaptive resolution.
